State Disability Insurance Requirements

In most states, employers are required to provide medical and compensation benefits to employees that are injured during the course of employment. A workers’ compensation insurance policy provides a method to fund these claims. But if an injury occurs when an employee is not at work, how are disability benefits paid to the employee?  Currently only five states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico require employers to provide short-term disability insurance benefits.  The remuneration amounts vary between the states and the funding mechanisms may vary from private insurance to a state pool:

Historically the push for disability benefits occurred as more woman joined the workforce to cover the loss of compensation from events of pregnancy.  Hence, all of the state disability insurance programs listed above pay maternity (mother) disability insurance benefits for pregnancy, childbirth and related disabling medical conditions.  What about Dad? Currently only California offers payments of benefits for paternity (father) leave. Paternity leave may be subject to the Family Medical Leave Act.
