State Disability Insurance Requirements
In most states, employers are required to provide medical and compensation benefits
to employees that are injured during the course of employment. A workers’ compensation
insurance policy provides a method to fund these claims. But if an injury occurs
when an employee is not at work, how are disability benefits paid to the employee?
Currently only five states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico require employers

Historically the push for disability benefits occurred as more woman joined the workforce to cover the loss of compensation from events of pregnancy. Hence, all of the state disability insurance programs listed above pay maternity (mother) disability insurance benefits for pregnancy, childbirth and related disabling medical conditions. What about Dad? Currently only California offers payments of benefits for paternity (father) leave. Paternity leave may be subject to the Family Medical Leave Act.
