Insuring Paving Contractors
Paving contractors apply various paving materials such as asphalt, stones, and bricks to form a smooth service for driving or walking. Often working with hot material and heavy equipment, pavers have unique insurance hazards during the course of business operations and after the job is complete.
Many pavers operate strictly as commercial contractors paving roads and highways. However due to the slowdown of the economy are now contracting residential jobs paving driveways, walkways, and patios. Conversely, many residential pavers are now leaping into the commercial arena bidding on large parking lots, and municipal roadways. This exposes the contractor to many issues that require a careful evaluation of the lines of coverage and exclusions.
Damage or loss to heavy equipment while in transit and at the jobsite is another concern of many paving contractors. Therefore emphasis should be carefully addressed when scheduling a list of the machinery & equipment at current replacement cost.
Since applying hot asphalt is subject to seasonality, it is common for pavers to engage in snow removal in the off season. This class of business has a high liability exposure resulting from trips and falls. It is important to ensure that the a snow removal exclusion is not attached to the policy if plowing is a business practice or even incidental to the operation.
